The Tru72 Operating Philosophy

We don't guess. We test.

Most HVAC companies size your system by square footage, fill refrigerant by gauge pressure, and skip combustion analysis because it takes ten extra minutes. We don't. Every Tru72 job is run with real instruments and real measurements, the same way the Larsell family has run it since April of 1972. The methodology has a name. It's been there for fifty-three years.

Heritage. Standard. Method.

Three things that show up on every job.

  • Same Values Since 1972.

"Do honest work, know your craft, stand behind your word." The Tru72 founding standard, written down in 1972 and never edited. Three generations of craftsmen have practiced the same operating discipline. The name changed in 2025. The way the work gets done did not.

  • Clean. Quality. Comfort.

"What we promise the homeowner, every visit." Clean means the technician leaves the home cleaner than they found it. Quality means the install matches the design and the design matches the data. Comfort means the system delivers what was measured for, in every room.

  • We Don't Guess. We Test.

"Real instruments. Real measurements. Every job." The diagnostic-first method. Manual J before sizing. Refrigerant weighed, not eyeballed. Combustion analysis on every gas appliance. Static pressure on every duct system. The numbers, on paper, before any recommendation.

Four steps. Every job. No shortcuts.

From repair calls to whole-system replacements.

  1. We test.

Real instruments, not rules of thumb. Before any recommendation, the technician measures what's actually happening in your system. Refrigerant weight, combustion gases, static pressure, electrical readings, temperature splits, infiltration sources. The kit on every Tru72 truck: Manual J load calc · refrigerant scale · combustion analyzer · manometer · anemometer · infrared thermal camera · multimeter · CO meter.

What it means: The diagnostic kit on every Tru72 truck is the same kit a manufacturer rep would carry: ACCA-grade instruments, calibrated, traceable.

  2. We translate.

The numbers become plain English. Most HVAC reports are written for other contractors, not homeowners. Tru72 hands you the data and the meaning together. "Your static pressure is 0.94 inches of water column, which is 35% above design. That's why your blower motor wore out at year 8 instead of year 15."

What it means: Every measurement gets a translation. Every translation gets a "what we'd do about it."

  3. We install.

The plan matches the measurement. The install plan is built from the diagnostic data, not from a generic catalog default. Right-sized equipment from Daikin or Goodman. Ductwork modified where the static pressure showed it had to be. Refrigerant charged by weight, not by gauge guess.

What it means: The homeowner sees the install plan before any commitment, and the install plan references the diagnostic numbers it was built on.

  4. We commission.

The system gets verified before we leave. Commissioning is the step almost no HVAC contractor performs. After the install, we re-measure the system performance to confirm it matches the design. Refrigerant subcooling and superheat verified. Combustion confirmed. Static pressure logged. The homeowner gets a commissioning report alongside the install paperwork.

What it means: If the numbers don't match the design, we adjust before we leave.

The instruments, one at a time.

Each measurement, explained.

  • Sizing

    Manual J Load Calculation

The ACCA-standard load calculation that determines correct HVAC sizing. Tru72 runs one on every replacement install at no extra cost.

  • Heat pumps

    Cold-climate heat pump installs

Why Pacific Northwest homes need heat pumps engineered for the climate, and how Tru72 sizes them with Manual J on every job.

  • Gas appliances

    Combustion analysis

Every Tru72 gas appliance install or repair includes a combustion analyzer reading. CO, O₂, stack temperature, draft verified.

  • Whole home

    Home performance testing

Blower-door test, duct leakage, thermal imaging. Where your home is losing comfort and energy, measured with numbers.

  • Air quality

    Indoor air quality assessment

Humidity, particulates, VOCs, allergens measured before any equipment recommendation. The data drives the design.

  • Zoned comfort

    Ductless installs & service

Zone-by-zone Manual J on new installs. Service on existing mini-splits regardless of who installed them. Most contractors won't.

How the diagnostic actually works.

Straight answers on tools, cost, and what happens next.

What instruments does a Tru72 technician actually bring to a diagnostic visit?

A refrigerant scale, a combustion analyzer, a manometer for static pressure, an anemometer for airflow, a multimeter for electrical readings, and an infrared thermal camera. TRU72 Heating & Cooling technicians carry the same kit on a routine repair call as on a full replacement estimate, because the diagnostic is what tells us which one you actually need. The instruments do the talking. The technician translates what they show into plain English before any work is proposed.

What does a static pressure test show, and why does it matter?

Static pressure is a manometer reading of how hard your blower motor is working to push air through the ductwork. High static pressure means the ducts are restricting airflow, which is a common reason a motor fails years early or a system never quite cools or heats the way it should. Low or uneven static pressure can point to leaky or disconnected ductwork. TRU72 Heating & Cooling measures static pressure on repair calls and installs alike, because a new unit dropped onto a duct system that was never sized right will inherit the same problem the old one had.

What is a Manual J load calculation, and why do it before recommending a replacement?

A Manual J load calculation measures how much heating and cooling your specific home actually needs, factoring in square footage, insulation, window count and orientation, ceiling height, and local climate. Most oversized or undersized systems trace back to skipping this step and simply matching the old equipment's tonnage. TRU72 Heating & Cooling runs a Manual J before recommending any replacement so the new system is sized to your house, not to a guess based on what was already sitting in the closet.

What happens if the diagnostic shows a repair is the better call than a full replacement?

We tell you that. The whole point of testing before recommending is that the data decides, not a sales quota. If the instruments show a failing capacitor or a refrigerant leak that a repair will fix, TRU72 Heating & Cooling recommends the repair and explains why a replacement isn't necessary yet. Same Values Since 1972 means the diagnosis drives the recommendation, whichever direction that takes the conversation.

How does the $72 diagnostic fee work?

The $72 covers a real diagnostic visit: a technician on site with instruments, running measurements, and giving you a written finding, not a sales pitch dressed up as a service call. If you decide to move forward with the repair, that $72 is credited toward the cost of the work, so you're not paying for the same visit twice. Mission Ready Plan members, first responders, teachers, and active or veteran military, pay $39 for the same diagnostic.

Who qualifies for the $39 Mission Ready diagnostic rate?

First responders, teachers, and active or veteran military qualify for the Mission Ready Plan, which includes a $39 diagnostic fee instead of the standard $72. It is TRU72 Heating & Cooling's way of saying thank you to the people who serve our communities, and it comes with the same real, instrumented diagnostic every customer gets. No shortcuts on the testing, just a lower price on the visit.

Diagnostic-first is not a marketing claim.

It's how the work got done in 1972.

The diagnostic-first method has always been the method on 1st Avenue in Albany. The instruments improved over the years, the software got better, the trucks got newer, but the way the work gets done has not changed in fifty-three years. Measure first. Recommend second. Stand behind your word.

When Tru72 Heating & Cooling came together in 2025, the discipline was already there. Same crew, same diagnostic kit, same standard, with a new name on the truck.

Same handshake. Same standard. Same method.
